Does enclosure size influence the behaviour & welfare of captive snakes (Pantherophis guttatus)?

چکیده

There is much evidence in mammals and birds demonstrating the importance of providing sufficient space to allow captive animals exhibit natural behaviours, however, little such exists for reptiles. The aim this study was ascertain whether enclosure size impacted on behaviour welfare corn snakes (Pantherophis guttatus). Snakes (N = 12) were housed enclosures that either 2/3 their length (small) or longer than snake (large) c.32 days. Their assessed through observations behavioural tests; after completing these tests, each animal switched other housing condition (order counterbalanced across individuals) received same assessment. Following second set all a preference test. When large enclosures, found be more active spent time stretched out - not possible small enclosure. tests revealed few effects provision; when given choice, showed clear whilst active, although observed while resting. These findings suggest larger beneficial snakes. Not fully elongate appears thwart need thus impacts negatively welfare. We therefore recommend kept an body length.

The influence of enclosure design on diurnal activity and stereotypic behaviour in captive Malayan Sun bears (Helarctos malayanus).

The effect of enclosure design on diurnal activity and stereotypic behaviour was assessed in 17 adult Malayan Sun bears (Helarctos malayanus), kept either in barren indoor enclosures or relatively enriched outdoor enclosures. Locomotion was the most frequent activity observed in the indoor bears, followed by resting. In contrast, conspecifics housed outdoors spent most of the time resting. Elev...

Sources and timing of calcium mobilization during embryonic development of the corn snake, Pantherophis guttatus.

Embryos of oviparous Reptilia (=turtles, lepidosaurs, crocodilians and birds) extract calcium for growth and development from reserves in the yolk and eggshell. Yolk provides most of the calcium to embryos of lizards and snakes. In contrast, the eggshell supplies most of the calcium for embryonic development of turtles, crocodilians and birds. The yolk sac and chorioallantoic membrane of birds ...

Snake co-occurrence patterns are best explained by habitat and hypothesized effects of interspecific interactions.

Snakes often occur in species-rich assemblages, and sympatry is thought to be facilitated primarily by low diet overlap, not interspecific interactions. We selected, a priori, three species pairs consisting of species that are morphologically and taxonomically similar and may therefore be likely to engage in interspecific, consumptive competition. We then examined a large-scale database of snak...

the influence of the neo-platonic concept of poetic imagination on wordsworth’s poetry
